You are a French manufacturer. Do you make all your furniture in France?
-
We manufacture 95% of our furniture in France, at our sites in Vendée. As regards our ranges of accessories, which account for around 5% of all our products (e.g. bedding, sofas, chairs, etc.), we are responsible for their design and subject our manufacturing partners to a rigorous selection procedure based on a wide range of quality, safety and environmental criteria.
-
-
Who designs the furniture? Where do the design ideas for Gautier furniture come from?
-
At Gautier, design is a fully integrated part of the technical department at our Le Boupère site (85). All our teams work closely together to create furniture that affords both style and quality.
-
-
Gautier always emphasises the quality aspect of its furniture. How do you justify these claims?
-
Backed by 50 years of experience, in 1994 we obtained ISO 9001 certification for our quality approach management. This enabled us to guarantee our furniture for five years. Furthermore, each piece of furniture made by Gautier meets current European and French standards.
-
-
What safety features do you include on your furniture for children?
-
All our products are designed in accordance with current French and European standards. For example, our junior bunk beds come with guard rails and non-slip steps. A logo draws your attention to these standards being met and indicates that the bunk beds are not suitable for children under 6 years old.

-
Do your panels emit formaldehyde?
-
Our research and development centre was one of the first in Europe to manufacture very low emission panels. Today, these panels create two times less formaldehyde emissions than the ideal rate stated by the EN 13986 European standard. With content less than 4mg/100g, this rate is close to natural emissions from plants. Our factory has also just obtained the CARB Phase 2 American certification which is among one of the most demanding in the world.
-
-
How do you protect your furniture?
-
For all surfaces which are subjected to daily use, we apply a lacquer or varnish depending on the furniture's design. We use UV varnishes and water-based lacquers with low solvent levels.
-
-
As regards the environment, what are you doing to reduce your ecological impact?
-
For several years, we have approached our furniture manufacturing process with an overall eco-design approach: selecting suppliers, wood from West France forests which are sustainably managed, lacquer with low solvent content, reusing wood off-cuts for heating our sites and more. All these efforts enabled us to obtain ISO 14001 certification in 2006 for our environmental commitment.
-
-
What do you do with your waste?
-
We recover 95% of production waste. Sawdust, a waste product of manufacturing, is used as heating energy in order to reduce our consumption of non-renewable resources. Some of these wood scraps are recycled as part of manufacturing our panels. All other waste from the company's production processes is sorted and sent to the appropriate treatment or recovery channels.
-
-
In terms of transportation, what are you doing to reduce your emissions?
-
By locally producing our own panels, we considerably limit transport between our sites. Furthermore, we obtain our wood from suppliers less than 250km away. We also optimise our rounds and load trucks without pallets to minimise journeys. Finally, we arrange with our main transporters to help avoid empty return trips.
